Honestly, it’s a wonderful track on its own, but Khalid feels wholly out of place on it, distracting the listener from enjoying themselves as they wonder if he was merely offered a bunch of different styles for Suncity & ticked off a checkbox in an attempt to represent all the different musical styles he was interested in.Overall, the lyrics center heavily on the narrator’s deep feelings of love for the apple of his eye. You can hear this immediately in his vocal delivery, the initial lyrics falling out of his mouth in a jumbled manner as if he didn’t quite understand what type of melody or lyrical cadence to use in this sort of song The melody gets a bit better as the song goes on, but even that starts to become repetitive, Khalid’s chronic enunciation issues leading to a performance that is aurally pleasant but lyrically empty, no one phrase sticking out as poignant or interesting since you can’t actually tell what he’s singing at any one point in the song – But, credit where credit is due, as the instrumentation for this track does provide a relaxing, well-balanced groove, resting somewhere between a Frou Frou ballad & a Drake number in terms of sound profile & mix quality, giving ample attention to the smooth bass elements of the track & making sure to spend plenty of time on dreamy vocal layering for that head-in-the-clouds, comatose aesthetic older Shoegaze & Indie Pop tracks used to go for. While it’s certainly nice to see Khalid trying on styles for size, feeling his way through these new sonic avenues in an attempt to broaden his musical horizons, it doesn’t feel heartfelt or intentional at all, as if he simply decided to write a Shoegazy sort of song one day after listening to LANY for a night rather than producing a song he truly feels in his heart.

Many of these attempts are fairly unimpressive flops, but a few stand out as unique performances with heavy narratives you can really get behind, some of Khalid’s most best work to date given that his outward appearance seems not to have changed in the last three years If you were hoping “Motion” was one of these grand departures, well, you’re in for a rude awakening, as it just barely scratches the surface of imagination without quite making the full plunge into individualistic expression, feeling more like a track heavily-inspired by his peers rather than something which illustrates his musical identity with any sort of efficacy – To elaborate, “Motion” is a straight-up cookie-cutter attempt at emulating The Weeknd, copying his droning vocal styles, ethereal instrumentation & Hip Hop-infused beats, even borrowing elements of his New Wave-inspired aesthetic by applying a quirky Indie glow to everything, the resonant bounce of synth elements & pulsating Dance Pop energy clashing with Khalid’s usual style.

To those who’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Khalid’s latest record Suncity in its entirety, you’ll likely be aware of his constant stylistic shifting from song to song & his seemingly-heightened viewpoint of himself throughout, holding on to his whiny adolescent vocal habits whilst simultaneously trying to break free into a more mature state of mind, his lyrics increasingly introspective as the album goes on.
